Organic Vegetables – problems when growing them. Growing organic vegetables is not an easy thing – to call the vegetables organic – or to get an organic certification means that you cannot use many of the products that commercial farmers use. Chemicals in fertilisers are often excluded in the long list of what you can use when organic farming. Sprays to kill bugs are not allowed – and in African conditions this can make growing organic vegetables quite difficult.
When you buy vegetables in a super market – they are almost perfect – the shape, the colour and the texture are almost impossibly perfect – and growing organic vegetables like this is impossible. The consumer has been spoilt in terms of what they expect their organic fruit and organic vegetable should look like – and they cannot look like GMO grown products. If a carrot is the wrong shape the buying public has been brainwashed into thinking there is something wrong with it – but in actual fact – naturally grown vegetables and fruit do have imperfections – they all look different and they will have marks and bug bites. We as the buying public need to make choices – and choosing GMO over organic because of looks is the wrong choice.
